Leading South Australian grain storage and handling network, Viterra, is offering career development opportunities in regional communities by introducing its own certified traineeship programme.
Viterra General Manager HR, Alyson Gilbey says the business is looking to broaden the appeal for people to start a career in the sector.
“We’re offering successful applicants the opportunity to build their skill sets and gain real life work experience in a varied, rewarding and valued role, while at the same time earning a nationally recognised Certificate III in Rural Operations,” Alyson says.
“The two-year programme offers full-time paid roles which combine on-the-job training at sites with formal education and is about mentoring and providing support to the trainees to support them through this exciting opportunity.
“Trainees will be able to learn industry skills and qualify for multiple tasks including grain classification, machinery operation, fumigation and grain hygiene, as well as driving front-end loaders and forklifts.”
Viterra is offering a total of 12 traineeships based in the Western region (Eyre Peninsula), Central region (mid and lower northern areas and Yorke Peninsula) and Eastern region (Murray Mallee and south-east area).
“The traineeships have been designed to provide trainees the opportunity to gain the new skills and knowledge required to secure a potential long-term role at the end of the programme.
“We think this is a great way to provide those who feel they have to choose between starting a career or studying the chance to do both. We’re really excited about this programme and for more people to start a rewarding and diverse career with us.”
Viterra is a large employer in regional South Australia, and is committed to supporting future local job prospects, and promoting the industry and the various career pathways that are available.
Viterra South East group Assistant Supervisor, Matilda Jeffries wasn’t expecting her part time role with Viterra to become a career she loves.
“I started working as an operator at Viterra while studying at university five years ago. I wasn’t looking for a fulltime role at the time but I was encouraged by one of my colleagues to apply and I’m so glad I did,” Matilda says.
“Learning on the job is a great advantage and the best part about working at the company is how you are encouraged to develop your skills and are given the opportunity to work at multiple sites.
“I really love it, especially travelling to different regions, meeting new people and working outdoors.”
Viterra Roseworthy group Assistant Supervisor, Daniel Neilson says if you’re motivated, the opportunities with Viterra are endless.
“A traineeship is the perfect way to obtain a first-hand look at how our agriculture network works,” Daniel says.
“I’d recommend asking plenty of questions along the way as the team is very friendly and this will help you to upskill and set you on the right career path. It’s rewarding work!”
In 2023, Viterra is also opening up two new maintenance apprenticeship roles to its business, following the successful introduction of two roles this year.
Viterra provides an inclusive, supportive, safe and exciting working environment. The company is committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 as part of its environmental sustainability strategy.
Applications are now open for Viterra’s 2023 traineeship programme, which will start in January. For further information or to apply visit Viterra.com.au. Applications close on Sunday 4 December.
