Glencore Agriculture owned, Viterra, has gifted the Waikerie silos, which have been transformed with artwork, to the local community for development and for all to enjoy.
The gifting of the site occurred in April this year and was followed by an official opening ceremony.
District Council of Loxton Waikerie CEO, David Beaton, said the gifting signified a valuable partnership between Viterra and Council.
“It is very positive to see Viterra, Council and the community working together to achieve results for the area,” David said.
“The silo art is a popular attraction and will continue to be enjoyed well in to the future.”
The silo art project, which was funded by the State Government in partnership with Nature Foundation South Australia, is the first project in a series of developments planned for the town.
Local community member Liz Frankel who was involved in the silo art project, said having the site gifted to the District Council provides an opportunity to create a precinct for the whole community to enjoy.
“We are progressing our plans to beautify the area by adding walking tracks, viewing areas, a park-like setting and onsite parking,” Liz said.
“We will have another public space for locals to enjoy, as well as for anyone that stops to admire the artwork.”
Two artists, Jimmy DVate and Garry Duncan, each painted one block of silos, depicting their interpretation of the theme ‘Healthy River Healthy Community’.
The silos are now adorned with local wildlife and river landscapes on both sides – a South Australian first – so the artwork can be enjoyed from two distinct vantage points.
Viterra Communications Manager, Jane McBride, said Viterra is actively involved and supportive of local communities.
“The Waikerie silos is the fifth silo art project for Viterra,” Jane said.
“We are pleased to have supported this community, who have worked in conjunction with Nature Foundation South Australia.”
