Viterra has released its preliminary segregation plan for the 2021/22 harvest to help growers plan for the season ahead.
This year, Viterra has included segregations for genetically modified canola (GM) following the change passed by South Australian Parliament to allow GM food crops to be cultivated in South Australia (except Kangaroo Island).
In January, Viterra sought feedback from growers on their intention to grow GM canola this season. The business plans to have segregations available at Edillilie and Tumby Bay in the Western region, Ardrossan, Owen and Port Pirie in the Central region, and Bordertown and Coonalpyn in the Eastern region.
Viterra has selected these sites based on feedback received through the survey about where GM canola is expected to be grown. The business has also considered how to best manage segregation and elevation capacity at sites. Segregations are subject to change based on further feedback.
The business is confident in its ability to handle, segregate and store GM and non-GM crops. The Viterra network is designed to receive and store multiple commodities and grades in separate segregations.
The preliminary segregation plan is available on the Viterra website. Key changes for the 2021/22 harvest include that Scope malt barley segregations will be confirmed based on end use market requirements, and lentil cleaning grades will be reviewed based on seasonal conditions and end user demand.
The plans are subject to change based on further feedback from growers and seasonal conditions.
Viterra will continue to work with growers and encourages feedback to their regional office to ensure segregations are available at sites across the network that meet their needs.
Viterra communicated the preliminary segregation plan directly to growers last week via email, SMS and notification through the Viterra app.
Viterra also communicated some changes to wheat variety classification based on the removal of wheat varieties in line with Wheat Quality Australia’s (WQA) Wheat Variety Master List.
Prior to last harvest, Viterra communicated changes that come into effect for the 2021/22 harvest. WQA has also published additional varieties which will be removed from the 2022/23 harvest. Once varieties are removed from our variety list, if they are delivered, the highest grade they can achieve is SFW1 feed grade. Information on varieties can be found on the Viterra website, in the classification section.
