Karoonda and Quorn silos nominated in art awards

Artwork projections on Viterra’s Karoonda and Quorn silos have been nominated as finalists in the Australian Street Art Awards for 2020.

The artwork projections have been nominated in the best mega mural category for original, permanent or projected artwork more than ten metres tall specifically created for the site and publicly visible.

The Karoonda silo art project was completed in 2019 and can be enjoyed by locals and visitors during the day with a large scale mural depicting town locals; Whiskey the kelpie and Diamond the sheep, and a permanent light projection displayed at night showcasing work from different South Australian artists.

Nominated in the same category, the Quorn silos are decorated with illuminated artwork each night which plays a sequence of animated stories reflecting the region’s history.

The winners will be announced next month at an awards dinner in Queensland. Viterra congratulates the local communities for their involvement in making these silo art projects a success.

The Quorn and Karoonda silo projects are two of eight in Viterra’s network that have been decorated with permanent artwork or light projections, several of which have won awards in recent years.

The Karoonda silos were part of the Colour Up Karoonda festival which was awarded silver winner in the South Australian Tourism Awards in 2019, as well as receiving a nomination as the best local landmark by 5MU local radio station. The artwork also received an Award of Merit from the Australian Civic Trust Awards in 2019, as did Coonalpyn, Kimba, Karoonda, Waikerie and Wirrabara silos in the same year.

The Cowell silos won the People’s Choice award in the Australian Civic Trust Awards in 2019, Kimba was awarded the Sustainable Communities Award by KESAB, and Tumby Bay won multiple awards in 2019 including winner in the Best Street Art Festival or Event, Finalist in the Best Mega Mural and People’s Choice Award.
