Viterra supports girls and women to make their mark

Viterra is proud to be a sponsor of Making her Mark, a new project which strives to inspire, encourage, and educate girls and women to disregard gender stereotypes when making career choices and improve gender diversity in workplaces.

Led by Business in Schools, Making Her Mark provides access to role models, resources and support for females aged 16 to 64 to embrace careers in non-traditional industries.

Viterra’s General Manager Human Resources, Alyson Gilbey says that Making Her Mark is an important and valuable initiative.

“As the saying goes, you ‘can’t be what you can’t see’. Through this program, girls and women can be inspired by the journeys of other women who are working in a variety of industries, uninhibited by gender stereotypes,” Alyson says.

Viterra is a large contributor to the communities where they operate, with most of the organisations’ ongoing workforce of 800 staff living and working in regional areas.

“The Making Her Mark events provide an excellent opportunity for girls and women in regional communities to learn more about the careers that are available to them where they live.”

Viterra employees recently attended an event in Port Lincoln to promote the many advantages of working in agriculture to an audience of secondary school students and their teachers.

Viterra Operations Supervisor Renee Dale was a speaker at the event, sharing insights into her career with Viterra, which saw her start with the business as a casual harvest worker in the 2017/18 season. Renee says that the event was something that she would have loved to have had access to as a school student.

“It was great to be able to share my experience with the students and demonstrate that women can have a very worthwhile career in agriculture with Viterra,” Renee says.

“It’s a supportive workplace with opportunities for upskilling and development and with the right attitude, you can go far.

“The students said they found it beneficial to listen to the stories of real women working in different industries to highlight the many career paths that are available to them.

“I really enjoyed being a part of the Making Her Mark event. I would have loved to have had access to something like this when I was considering my future career path.”
