Viterra has published the results from its 2023/24 planting survey, which includes feedback from almost 1000 of its grower customers about the commodities, varieties and hectares they have planted for the season.
Viterra releases a planting survey each year to understand what is being grown. The feedback that growers provide through the survey helps to guide Viterra’s segregation plans at sites for the coming harvest.
The results collected by Viterra in this year’s planting survey has highlighted that overall plantings of wheat, barley and canola have remained largely unchanged.
The survey findings also indicated that varieties of malt barley are continuing to change. Maximus and Commodus barley are the most planted varieties this year, accounting for a combined 57% of plantings.
Results showed that plantings of GM canola have risen across all regions to 39% in 2023/24, up from 31% in 2022/23.
Lentil plantings have slightly increased, while other pulses have seen a small decrease. Planting of Nipper type lentils has increased, and there’s been a reduction in the Hallmark variety.
Viterra will publish its segregation plans ahead of harvest, following further consultation with its grower customers.
Growers who did not complete the survey and wish to provide information on their plantings are encouraged to contact their local grower relationship manager, operations coordinator, supervisor or manager, or call Viterra on 1800 018 205.
Viterra’s grower customers who took part in the survey also had the opportunity to win one of five $1000 community donations offered by Viterra to a community group of their choice.
Congratulations to the five survey winners and their community group of choice:
- Darryl Behn, Riverton, nominated Riverton CFS
- Jon Buckley, Tatiara, nominated Frances Bowling Club
- David McHugh, Mount Compass, nominated Mount Compass Netball Club
- Alan Twartz, Yorketown, nominated Yorketown Cricket Club
