Moving grain through a world-leading network

With a near record crop expected this harvest, Viterra is focused on moving South Australian grain deliveries through its world-leading, fully integrated agriculture network as quickly and safely as possible.

Two weeks ago, Viterra loaded its first train with new season grain at its Bowmans site.

The company loaded the train with 3000 tonnes of barley destined for Outer Harbor to help accumulate grain for the bumper shipping programme this season.

Viterra Central region Operations Manager, Jack Tansley says the first train was an important milestone for the season.

“It’s great to see growers’ grain moving to port by train for shipping to international markets,” Jack says.

“We are also continuously moving grain by truck for shipping and overflow to ensure we have enough storage capacity for growers, which is important in a busy and big harvest.

“Our sites are open and ready for growers to deliver and we will work with growers to match our operations to their needs.”

As of Sunday 20 November, Viterra had received over 560,000 tonnes into its sites so far this harvest.

Viterra’s strong shipping programme will continue this year with 18 exporters already booking more than seven million tonnes of grain through Viterra’s South Australian ports for 2022/23.

This is a record number of exporters and tonnes booked which shows demand for South Australian grain and the confidence the grain industry has in the Viterra network.

Dynamic binning for malting barley grades

For the 2022/23 season, Viterra has introduced a dark tipped tolerance for malting grades for loads outside of receival standards through dynamic binning.

Viterra General Manager Operations, Gavin Cavanagh says the change is good news for local growers.

“Whilst the majority of grain received this harvest has been of good quality, we are working to connect grower and buyer customers to match their requirements where we see quality impacts due to the seasonal conditions,” Gavin says.

“As a result we have introduced dynamic binning for dark tipped into our malting barley grades which is a positive for growers as it allows additional grain to be received into those segregations, providing growers with more opportunities to receive higher value for their grain.”
