Viterra’s Karoonda silos have been awarded gold winner of the 2020 Best Mega Mural in the recent Australian Street Awards.
The silo art was nominated in the category for original, permanent or projected artwork more than ten metres tall specifically created for the site and publicly visible. It also won ‘Best of the Best’ with the highest cumulative score of all category winners, which included best landmark sculpture, best metropolitan art and best landmark.
The Karoonda silo art was painted by street artist, Heesco with a large scale mural of town locals; Whiskey the kelpie and Diamond the sheep. It can be enjoyed by locals and visitors during the day and at night with its permanent light projection showcasing work from different South Australian artists.
Karoonda’s awards are in addition to others it has received since the project was completed in 2019. It has won an Award of Merit from the Australian Civic Trust Awards, Nomination of Best Local Landmark by 5MU Simply the Best Award 2019, and silver at the South Australian Tourism Awards 2019 for the Colour Up Karoonda festival.
Nominated in the same category and taking home silver at the Australian Street Art Awards 2020, the Quorn silos are decorated with illuminated artwork each night which plays a sequence of animated stories reflecting the region’s history.
Viterra congratulates the local groups and communities involved in these silo art projects for making them a success.
Viterra is pleased to have supported nine silo art projects by providing the silos as a blank canvas and in-kind support. All of the projects have involved permanent artwork painted onto the silos with the exception of Quorn and its illuminated artwork projections.
Viterra’s Farrell Flat silos are the most recent to have undergone an artwork transformation late last year. It features a colourful sunset and the last train that passed through the town. Other Viterra silos with artwork include Wirrabara in the north, Kimba, Tumby Bay and Cowell on the Eyre Peninsula, Coonalpyn in the South East and Waikerie in the Murray Mallee.
Each project has had positive feedback from the communities and provides a boost for the regional towns.
