Viterra received the first delivery of 2023/24 season grain to its Western region Thevenard site last Monday 25 September. Harvest also kicked off in our Central region with a load of barley delivered at Port Pirie later Monday afternoon.
During the week Viterra’s Tooligie, Kimba and Port Neill sites also received their first deliveries for the season, and growers have now delivered over 1200 tonnes across the five sites.
Charra grower Jesse Chandler, who made the first delivery to Thevenard says he is hopeful for a good season.
“It’s always great to make a start to harvest after everything that goes into producing a crop. It’s exciting to get into harvest and be Viterra’s first load for the state,” Jesse says.
“Although we’ve started earlier than normal and yields are down a little, quality is good with H1 on our first load.
Viterra General Manager Operations, Gavin Cavanagh says Viterra is looking forward to supporting local growers when they start harvesting.
“We’re well positioned to work with our grower customers to safely and efficiently receive their new season crops, provide a high-level of service, and export their grain to international markets,” Gavin says.
“We work closely with our grower customers in the lead up to harvest to understand what they are growing and ensure our service offering, including opening hours and segregations, matches their needs.”
As part of its harvest preparations, Viterra has invested over $60 million on capital expenditure and maintenance across its network.
“Ready for harvest, we have purchased new equipment like drive over hopper stackers and front end loaders and made upgrades to weighbridges and bunkers where it provides the greatest value to our customers,” Gavin says.
Viterra General Manager Supply Chain, Derek Robjohns says domestic and international buyers are eagerly awaiting the increase of harvest deliveries into the Viterra network.
“We have strong demand across all our ports with 6.3 million tonnes of forward shipping booked by 18 exporters, which is great news for our grower customers,” Derek says.

Viterra wins two major South Australian awards
Viterra triumphed at the 2023 South Australian Premier’s Business and Export Awards on Friday 22 September in Adelaide, taking home two awards.
Viterra was announced as the winner of the South Australian Large Business Award, and the Regional Exporter Award at the gala event at the Adelaide Convention Centre, hosted by Business SA in collaboration with the State Government.
The Large Business Award acknowledges Viterra’s achievements over 12 months to May 2023, including receiving the record 2022/23 harvest, and outturning growers’ 2021/22 and 2022/23 season grain on behalf of our buyer customers. The Regional Exporter Award recognises Viterra’s success exporting the 2021/22 and 2022/23 Australian harvests to end users around the world.
In accepting the awards, Viterra Chief Executive Officer ANZ, Philip Hughes acknowledged the significant role Viterra’s employees and grower and buyer customers play in the company’s success.
“These awards are a credit to our incredible employees, our grower customers for the world class quality grain they produce and our buyer customers for their support. Congratulations and thank you to everyone on this exciting win,” Philip says.
“We’re proud of our contribution to regional South Australia as a receiver, handler and major exporter of local grower’s grain.”
