1 million tonnes of SA grain headed internationally

During February, we also reached an exciting seasonal milestone surpassing one million tonnes of 2024/25 exports from our six port terminals on behalf of buyers.

Viterra General Manager Operations, Gavin Cavanagh says Viterra has now sent southern Australian growers’ grain to more than 20 international destinations.

“We’ve had a really strong export programme considering the below average season, and are now sitting at over 1.3 million tonnes of SA grain shipped from our ports across 36 vessels,” Gavin says.

“This includes loading the largest vessel from our network since the 2021/21 season at Outer Harbor in January, with 71,500 tonnes of wheat headed to the Middle East.” Read more.

Growers bolster community support with Viterra donations for rural organisations

Three rural organisations have been recognised for their vital work amongst local communities, and are now set to benefit from cash donations from leading agriculture network, Viterra made on behalf of its grower customers.

The Bute and Districts Lions Club, Kimba Area School and Pinnaroo Ambulance Service will each receive $3000 donations from Viterra after being nominated by local growers in this year’s postharvest survey competition.

Pinnaroo Ambulance Service Volunteer Team Leader, Rob Berlin says the Viterra donation is a welcome boost to the station, which provides 24/7 ambulance cover across the Pinnaroo and surrounding areas.

“Our volunteers do an excellent job providing this crucial service to the community, sometimes travelling as far as 100km to respond to incidents, assist local residents, and provide care until more help arrives,” Rob says.

“We’re incredibly grateful to Gary and Viterra for the support through this donation, which will make a huge difference in supporting our team and the Pinnaroo Ambulance Service.”

On the Eyre Peninsula, the Kimba Area School will use the donation to help further develop and offer alternate learning pathways to the school’s 190 students.

“As well as currently offering Vocational Education and Training (VET) options where students can gain qualifications while finishing their schooling, we are in the process of building an agriculture programme to meet students’ and the community’s needs,” Deputy Principal, Ryan Hanan says.

“With agriculture playing such a big role in so many of our students’ lives, there’s huge demand for more industry-aligned pathways that will help build the local workforce and retain young people in the area.

“The donation from Darren and Viterra will assist us in further developing and providing these types of pathways locally, which will support our students, the Kimba community and the agriculture industry all at once.”

Viterra General Manager Operations, Gavin Cavanagh says Viterra is pleased to support regional communities on behalf of its customers through the postharvest survey competition.

“The feedback we gain through the survey is really important in helping us improve and understanding what our customers value, and it’s great to be able to thank those who offer their insights by giving them the chance to win a donation to a cause that’s important to them,” Gavin says.

“This is just one of the ways we give back to the regional communities we operate in, and where most of our customers, employees, and suppliers live and work.”

Viterra contributes to regional South Australia as a major employer, with the majority of its 1000 permanent and ongoing employees based regionally, as well as boosting the SA economy through purchasing grain from local growers and investing in its supply chain, last season adding $1.2+ billion to the state.

Viterra is also proud to further support local communities through a range of sponsorships and other initiatives, such as sponsoring grower groups and events, and partnering with the Adelaide Crows to launch the Country connect football programme in 2024.

“Over 400 footy juniors across South Australia participated in coaching clinics as part of last year’s inaugural Country connect programme, which brought past and current AFL and AFLW players to three country clubs over a weekend,” Gavin says.

“As well as running the coaching clinics, the Crows and Viterra employees supported match day events by assisting with tasks such as running water, manning the canteen and providing coaching support.

“After the success of last year’s programme, we are excited continue to add value to regional communities by bringing the Adelaide Football Club back to host Country connect at three new country clubs across the Viterra network this year.”
